Know Thyself: Questions for Self-Discovery

This article explores topics for inner exploration and personal introspection.

The keys to healing, empowerment, and enlightenment lie within each one of us awaiting our discovery. It is possible to live a life of peace regardless of your circumstances. It is possible for each of you to reach great heights and do more than you thought you were capable of doing.

Each person has a deep inner drive to know who they are, what their purpose is in the larger scheme of things. Finding ones purpose requires the most difficult journey there is however, the journey within your own soul to explore, uproot, and discover the many facets to your consciousness. Most people spend great deals of time and energy avoiding issues from within, particularly anything that involves uncomfortable feelings like fear, pain, or anger. The truth is however the only path to self mastery is to 'know thyself" and the only way to do that is to face ourselves with complete honesty and compassion, which means facing all parts of the self, even those that are difficult and/or uncomfortable.

Denial and avoidance only prolong suffering. One key to self-discovery lies in questions and inner dialogue with your "higher self", the soul connection you have between "you" and the Creator energy or "universe" or "God" or however you choose to view it. Pondering the questions below can open the flood gates allowing you to explore the depths of your soul and as a result developing a deeper sense of identity and purpose.

Consider the following questions, one at a time, taking plenty of time to explore it fully. If the questions cause you to come up with more questions write those down as well so that you can go back and explore them. Use a journal to record your responses, feelings, thoughts, etc.

Questions for Self-Discovery:

  1. Who am I? Outside of my role as parent/child/worker etc. When I am alone all by myself, who am I?
  2. What are my unique talents and traits I offer?
  3. What am I afraid of and why?
  4. Do I fear death? Avoid the thought? How do I handle the concept of Death?
  5. What does it mean to be alive?
  6. What person do I admire the most and why? Do I see these qualities within myself?
  7. Which Person do I least admire and why? Do I see these qualities within myself?
  8. What are my dreams? Do I actively pursue them?
  9. What is my life purpose? Do I recognize my higher calling? If not why?
  10. Create an image for your perfect inner sanctuary. Describe this place. What does it look like? Feel like? Etc. Bring it to perfect detail.

The above are just a small sampling of questions for self-discovery that can open up doors to new discoveries and inner peace. Work on these questions and see what other ideas/questions come up.
